Summing up the analysis of "The Yellow Wall-Paper", it is worthwhile to point out that Charlotte Perkins Gilman
brilliantly uses a lot of different stylistic
devices and expressive means, which help to bring home to the
reader the main idea of the text. I’d
like to say that the whole text was full of cases of irony, which make an
enormous contribution in revealing the personalities of the main characters.
Moreover, the use of personification, as well as metaphors, emphasizes the main images of the short story under
analysis. As for the syntactical
devices (namely, rhetorical questions and exclamation
marks, different kinds of repetitions, parallel constructions, antithesis, polysyndeton and asyndeton, emphatic constructions
with “do/does”), they attract
the reader’s attention to the
most crucial parts of the text. Speaking about graphic
devices, the role of the hyphen and italics is extremely important in the
story.
