I liked it!!!

In my last post I would like to thank for this marvelous opportinity of creating blogs! That is inforgetable experience that will definitrly come in handy in my future life. And stylistic analysis!! Just some months ago i was shocked hearing this phrase, but now Ieven liked this. I could never have thought that every word has some value in the text! That's incredible!
So, thanks a lot!!!

Let's make a conclusion!!!

Summing up the analysis of "The Yellow Wall-Paper", it is worthwhile to point out that Charlotte Perkins Gilman brilliantly uses a lot of different stylistic devices and expressive means, which help to bring home to the reader the main idea of the text. I’d like to say that the whole text was full of cases of irony, which make an enormous contribution in revealing the personalities of the main characters. Moreover, the use of personification, as well as metaphors, emphasizes the main images of the short story under analysis. As for the syntactical devices (namely, rhetorical questions and exclamation marks, different kinds of repetitions, parallel constructions, antithesis, polysyndeton and asyndeton, emphatic constructions with “do/does”), they attract the reader’s attention to the most crucial parts of the text. Speaking about graphic devices, the role of the hyphen and italics is extremely important in the story.

EXPRESSIVE MEANS AND STYLISTIC DEVICES

In order to portray the characters, to describe the setting and to reveal the main idea of the story convincingly the author resorts to some devices.

One should say that Charlotte Perkins Gilman brilliantly uses lexical means, namely situational, dramatic and verbal irony, personification, epithets,  metaphor and simile, to describe in a precise way the events of “The Yellow Wallpaper” and to create vivid images.
Proceeding to the syntactical devices, there are a lot of  rhetorical questions and exclamation marks, parallelism, antithesis,  asyndeton, polysyndeton and asyndeton.
Phonetic devices are presented, first of all, by alliteration, which aims at imparting a melodic effect to the utterance, and assonances.
As for the graphic devices, the role of the hyphen is extremely important in the story.Apart from this, to stress the most important words by giving them a sort of  special coloring, reveal the personality of the main character, draw readers’ attention to the most crucial part of the extract and describe the setting in a descent way, Charlotte Perkins makes use of italics.

THE TYPE OF THE SPEECH

The type of the speech employed by the author of the analyzed text is a meditation with interior speech and elements of narration, landscape and interior description.
From the viewpoint of composition, the text is made of almost all the traditional elements.
The text begins with the exposition, where we read about the characters, setting and all the explanatory information we need to comprehend the situation in the story.
Then goes the development of the events, where we read about the main character’s attemps to decode the pattern of the wallpaper in her room. Also we can see the relationships between the main character and all the people who surround her.

As for the climax, the turning point in the plot is the moment when the narrator strips off all the wallpaper in her room.  The narrator completely identifies herself with the woman imprisoned in the wallpaper. This is the ultimate moment of rebellion for the protagonist as she takes action towards freedom.

The denouement is John’s reaction to the narrator’s so-called rebellion: “"What is the matter?" he cried. "For God's sake, what are you doing! ". He simply faints, being shocked of his wife’s behaviour: “Now why should that man have fainted? But he did, and right across my path by the wall, so that I had to creep over him every time!

MARY

Speaking about the minor characters of the story, we are to mention Mary - a woman who takes care of the newborn. This woman was mentioned only once in the story: “It is fortunate Mary is so good with the baby. Such a dear baby! And yet I cannot be with him, it makes me so nervous.” But still we can assume that she is a very loving and pleasant person. Some critics have pointed to the name Mary as a clear reference to the Virgin Mary – a strong symbol of love and motherhood.

JOHN

Another character is the narrator’s husband John, who is described through both direct and indirect types of characterization. First of all, the main traits of his character are mentioned by the narrator: “John is practical in the extreme. He has no patience with faith, an intense horror of superstition, and he scoffs openly at any talk of things not to be felt and seen and put down in figures”. As such, John embodies a supreme rationality that makes it difficult for the narrator to convince him of her sincere discomfort with her room and its coloring.
Moreover, we get to know that the man is a high-ranking physician: “John is a physician … a physician of high standing” However, he fails to cure his wife’s disease. Even worse! He fails to admit that his prescriptions do not work. I guess that in the following lines are implied a sort of irony: "...you really are better, dear, whether you can see it or not.  I am a doctor, dear, and I know.  You are gaining flesh and color, your appetite is better".  The narrator’s reply is: "I don't weigh a bit more, nor as much; and my appetite may be better in the evening when you are here, but it is worse in the morning when you are away!" John is so sure that he knows what’s best for his wife that he disregards her own opinion of the matter, forcing her to hide sincere feelings: “John does not know how much I really suffer. He knows there is no reason to suffer, and that satisfies him.”

To say the least of it, John consistently patronizes his second half: “He is very careful and loving, and hardly lets me stir without special direction. I have a schedule prescription for each hour in the day; he takes all care from me, and so I feel basely ungrateful not to value it more.” Charlotte Perkins Gilman makes us of irony here extremely skillfully, which helps her to show the real side of the personality of John.
