It stands out a mile that from the point of view of presentation the text is the 1st person narrative. Let me prove it to you! While reading the story we see the opinions, thoughts, and feelings only of the narrator, and no other characters. It seems to me that Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s use of the first person to convey the story allows readers to go along for the ride into madness and cultivates a certain amount of sympathy for the woman and her plight. The constant use of "I" puts us right in the narrator’s head and allows us to empathize with her.
Does the choice of such type of narrative make the presentation of the events in the story more objective or subjective? How does it impact your perception of the story?
ОтветитьУдалитьTo my mind, the choice of such type of narrative makes the presentation of the events more subjective, for we have no opportunity to have a look at the perception of the events by other characters. Nothing of the kind! In this way, it seems as if we immerse yourself in the mind of the narrator. I guess that the whole narration acquires a kind of an intimate tone.
